Memory Drawing

Hey!

Ok so my art teacher is making us do some memory drawings. And now I am going to make you do it! bwahahahaha! Na, I'm only kidding, but it is kind of fun...

Now memory drawing takes some time, and they will get easier with time. They are hard, its just training your mind once more to look more carefully at the shape and the negative shapes. Negative shapes are the shapes that lie on the outside of the actual shape.  Now what you want to do it stare at the photo for some time, then look away and try to draw it, lower the tab so you cannot just look up. Then you can keep doing this until the shape looks very close, or the exact shape of the shape you are looking at. I would start with a simple shape. Draw a rectangle and in that rectangle draw what you see.  Every time you draw technically you are drawing from memory, you need to look away from the photo, model, or scene to draw it.

Try these, and start simple. Once you have one shape done, put your picture up to the board and flash your eyes back and forth until the shape looks good enough to your standards.

Simply look at the shapes on the outside of the photo.

Do these simple ones and then see if you can do harder ones like this:

Or even harder like this one:

I am not even this far yet into memory drawing, but if you are feeling that courageous then go ahead and have fun!

Enjoy!
